On 14th September 2024, a theological symposium titled “The Journey of Hope: Illuminated by the Word of God” was organized by Don Bosco Theological Centre as part of its annual academic plan, at the INM Provincial House Bicentenary Hall. The symposium was coordinated by the third-year theology students, under the guidance of Rev. Dr. Patrick Mathias. The Provincial House graciously hosted the event. The day began with Mass at 7:00 a.m., celebrated by Rev. Dr. Don Bosco Lourdusamy SDB, the Provincial of INM, who wished everyone the very best for the day’s proceedings. The symposium officially commenced at 9:00 a.m. with a prayer service, followed by a welcome address from Rev. Dr. Emmanuel MaddhichettySDB, the principal of DBTC, who welcomed the speakers and Rev. Dr. Pathiaraj Rayappan SDB, the rector of Becchi Don Bosco honoured all the speakers of the day.
The Keynote Address, delivered by Rev. Dr. Raj Irudaya SJ highlighted the numerous challenges to hope in the contemporary world, such as social unrest, wars, and moral confusion. However, he affirmed that this theological symposium serves as a meaningful response to these challenges. By reflecting on the Word of God, the symposium seeks to provide answers and spiritual direction, helping participants become true bearers of hope in today’s world.
Following the keynote address, five insightful papers were presented. The first was by Rev. Dr. Raymond Joseph, who spoke on “Understanding the Year of Jubilee: Biblical Foundations and Historical Context.” He explored the biblical and historical significance of the Jubilee Year, highlighting its call for renewal, restoration, and freedom as we approach the jubilee year. Rev. Dr. C. Lawrence then presented his paper, “Hope in the New Testament: Teachings of Jesus in the Gospels,” where he emphasized how Jesus’ life and mission embody hope, offering guidance and encouragement through His teachings in the Gospels. Before the lunch break, Rev. Dr. Stanislaus delivered his paper titled “Anchored in Hope: Paul’s Vision of Perseverance and Expectation.” He focused on St. Paul’s theology of hope, which was shaped by his struggles and remains relevant for believers facing challenges in today’s world.
After a lunch break at 1:00 p.m., Rev. Dr. David Stanley Kumar presented “The Prophetic Vision of Jubilee: Lessons from the Prophets,” which examined the messages of Isaiah and Jeremiah, who called for justice and renewal during periods of social and spiritual brokenness. The final paper, “God’s Heart for the Vulnerable: Hope for Women, Children, and the Oppressed,” was presented by Rev. Dr. Sr. Devapriya, who underscored how God’s compassion, as revealed in Scripture, extends particularly to the marginalized, with a focus on women, children, and the oppressed. Two floor discussions, moderated by Rev. Dr. Victor Antonyraj and Rev. Dr. Patrick Mathias, allowed participants to reflect on the presentations in the panel discussion. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a hymn to Don Bosco, marking the end of a fruitful day of reflection at 4:00 p.m.
